- Abstract:
- These data consist of elevation information stored as digital elevation models (DEMs) in TIFF format. The spacing of the elevation points is 2.5 meters. Each DEM covers an area of approximately 20 square miles along the Yellowstone River floodplain, and there are 40 sections in this phase of the mapping project. These data are derived from triangulated irregular network (TIN) datasets that were built from LIDAR data. The TIN data and similar TIN and DEM data collected in 2004 for the remainder of the lower Yellowstone River are available at http://geoinfo.montanastatelibrary.org/data/yellowstone_river_corridor_resource_clearinghouse/elevation_data.
- Purpose:
- These data were created as part of a joint Yellowstone River Conservation District Council and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District cumulative impacts study of the Yellowstone River channel and floodplain. The multi-agency interdisciplinary planning study extends 477 river miles from Sweetgrass County, Montana to the Missouri River confluence in McKenzie County, North Dakota. These data are specifically intended to provide an accurate digital surface model with which to analyze the hydraulic conditions of the Yellowstone River channel and floodplain. The data were created to operate within the ArcGIS software environment. In addition, they are intended to serve as a base for the project GIS and also to support a wide variety of analyses including planimetric data extraction (e.g., infrastructure, riverine geomorphology, land cover, habitat and vegetation), and to monitor long-term river channel changes.

- Process step:
- The LiDAR data was acquired using a Leica ALS50 from an average altitude of 3,000-feet above ground level to provide an average ground sample distance of 2.1-feet. First and last return data was collected along with the signal return intensity. Two redundant airborne GPS bases stations were utilized during the data acquisition with maximum line-of-sight distance between the base station and aircraft of 20-km. The LiDAR data was reduced using Grafnav (Waypoint Consulting) for GPS post-processing, PosProc (Applanix Crop) for IMU processing, ALS50 Post Processor (LH Systems) to initial LiDAR processing, TerraScan (Terrasolid) for initial point classification, and proprietary Woolpert developed software for refining the point classification and QC. The LiDAR data was reviewed in 3D using a digital photogrammetric work station using ADS40 digital stereo imagery. The LiDAR data was filtered into breaklines to separate the mass point. After the data set was filtered it was then imported to ArcGIS 3D Analyst to create the TIN.

- The 2.5 meter DEMs were produced from the ASCII TIN data. A DEM mosaic of each county was created from the input ASCII files. The DEM tiles on the State Library web site were clipped from the DEM mosaics by the State Library.
