Abstract:
Color Aerial photos of the Yellowstone River floodplain in Stillwater, Yellowstone, and Dawson Counties, Montana. Photos are georeferenced and georectified, and have a ground resolution of 0.3 meters, or approximately one foot. The photographs were taken on May 1 and 2, 2004.
Purpose:
This coverage was created as part of a joint Yellowstone River Conservation Districts Council and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District cumulative impacts study of the Yellowstone River channel and floodplain. The multi-agency interdisciplinary planning study extends 477 river miles from Sweetgrass County, Montana to the Missouri River confluence in McKenzie County, North Dakota. It is specifically intended to support the hydraulic, geomorphic, biologic and socioeconomic analyses that are part of the planning study. The first phase of the mapping focused on Stillwater, Yellowstone and Dawson Counties in Montana and included approximately 295 square miles of floodplain.

These high resolution (30 cm) digital images are intended to serve as a base for the project GIS and were acquired to support a wide variety of analyses including: digital surface model development (topographic base for hydraulic floodplain delineation), planimetric data extraction (infrastructure, riverine geomorphology, land cover, habitat and vegetation), and as a base map for monitoring long-term river channel changes.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute accuracy report:
During photographic reproduction of the source photography, limited analog dodging is performed to improve image quality. Analog dodging consists of holding back light from certain areas of the sensitized photographic material to avoid overexposure. Image color values may deviate from color values of the original imagery due to image value interpolation during the scanning and rectification process. Radiometry is verified by visual inspection of the ortho image.

Completeness report:
All orthoimagery is visually inspected for completeness to ensure that no gaps, hard seam lines, or shifting has occurred. All images are clipped to the tile extent and radiometrically balanced with surrounding images. All images are cloud free and source photography is flown leaf-on.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
The ortho imagery horizontal positional accuracy and the assurance of that accuracy depend, in part, on the accuracy of the data inputs to the rectification process. These inputs consist of the digital terrain model (DTM), fully digital analytic aerotriangulation (FDAAT) control and methods, the photo source camera calibration, scanner calibration, and aerial photographs. The orthoimagery output from these inputs meet National Map Accuracy Standards (NMAS). Aerial cameras have current certification from the USGS, National Mapping Division, Optical Science Laboratory. Test calibration scans are performed on all source photography scanners.

Publication place: Aurora, CO
Publisher: Merrick & Company
Type of source media: online
Source contribution:
The digital terrain model (DTM) was created from LIDAR data and from supplemental data compiled from aerial photography. The DTM meets National Map Accuracy Standards.

Process step:
The digital orthophotography was rectified from the color aerial photography. The color film negatives were scanned at an input resolution of fourteen microns for input resolution of one-third meter (0.33m). The orthoimagery was rectified to the DTM data and aerotriangulation results using Cubic Convolution methodology. The ortho imagery was mosaicked and radiometrically balanced to ensure tonal consistency. The final pixel resolution is 30cm. Said orthoimagery meets National Map Accuracy Standards.
