Abstract:

Path of the Continental Divide through Montana. In Montana, the Continental Divide separates the watershed of the Columbia River from the watersheds of the Mississippi and Nelson Rivers. This data is based on 1:100,000 scale U.S. Geological Survey quadrangles. The layer is a series of 18 connected lines because the original data was in ESRI coverage format, which only supports 500 vertices per line feature.

Process step:

Dissolve the hydrologic unit polygons based on the first two digits of their hydrologic unit codes. Delete lines that represent the state boundary. Generalize the lines with a tolerance of 10 meters. Edit the data to properly follow the Continental Divide between Mount Custer and the boundary with Canada.
