Montana Lakes and Streams map
Abstract:
This layer contains streams and lake shorelines selected from 1:100,000 scale US Census Bureau TIGER files. The featues were selected to approximately match data shown in USGS 1:2,000,000 scale DLG files.
In this layer, lines may represent the centerline of a stream, the shorelines of a wide stream represented by a polygon in the lakes layer, the shorelines of a lake, or a boundary between two polygons with different names.
Feature names are mostly from the TIGER files. Some were obtained from from Montana DOT county maps and USGS topographic maps.

Size classification is arbitrary. In some cases, one fork of a stream is used to represent the upper reaches of a stream, so the name may not be exactly accurate.
Completeness report:
This is an arbitrary selection of streams from the TIGER data. All known rivers were selected. Lakes and other streams were selected based on area or length, spacing, and familiarity.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
Approximately 50 meters, assuming the source maps meet National Map Accuracy Standards

The features in the layers were selected from this data set. This data set provided most of the stream and lake names.

Process step:
Convert TIGER files to Arc/Info format and project them from Geographic coordinates to Albers. Performed at the Billings office of GeoResearch (406-248-6771).

Process step:
Select major streams and lakes from the TIGER data. This was performed between 10/1/92 and 7/23/93.
